Safe environments for children: a commitment to peace
The School Day of Non-Violence and Peace is an occasion that reminds us of the importance of creating safe environments for children—spaces where they can reach their full potential and build a future of peace.
According to UNICEF, “an education inspired by a culture of non-violence and peace enables students to acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills that strengthen their development as critical global citizens committed to their own rights and the rights of others.”
At aeioTU, when we speak of safe environments, we refer to the various spaces that foster the proper physical, mental, emotional, and social development of children—spaces where the promotion of their fundamental rights is established within a framework of protection. These are environments conducive to learning and socially safe for the children and families involved in early childhood development, whether in educational settings or at home.
Here are some key aspects of safe environments for early childhood:
• It is important to recognize that when we speak of safe environments, we are not referring only to the physical spaces where children interact—such as schools, parks, or their homes—but also to everything that provides them with security, warmth, harmony, and protection, thereby enabling their holistic development.
• Safe environments must allow children to play, explore, observe, and discover a thousand ways to express their curiosities, interests, and preferences. When this happens, the environment becomes a "third teacher"—a vehicle that enhances the meaningful experiences taking place within these spaces.
• Promoting inclusive approaches to education is a fundamental element in building safe environments; it ensures that all children feel at ease interacting with others and capable of engaging in experiences, regardless of their ethnicity, disabilities, religious beliefs, or other characteristics.
• The teachers who support these children must believe in the importance of safe environments—not only for the children to reach their full potential but also for healing emotional wounds resulting from past experiences; ...and in managing the difficult situations they may be experiencing in the present.
• Warm interactions are another key element in establishing safe environments for children; they ensure children feel at ease to play, explore, investigate, and engage in meaningful learning.
When children feel safe, they can focus on learning and exploring their surroundings. They are also more likely to develop the social and emotional skills that enable them to resolve conflicts peacefully.
